Why it matters early
The earlier it's found, the sooner you can work on it with your doctor.
Things that can raise it
Family history, extra weight, a lot of sodium, not much activity, heavy drinking, poor sleep, and some medicines like decongestants and NSAID pain relievers — check with a pharmacist.
How often to check
The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening adults 18–39 with normal blood pressure and no risk factors every 3–5 years, and every year from age 40 or if you're at higher risk.
If your reading is high
Don't panic over one number. Re-check it the right way (see How to get an accurate blood pressure reading) and talk to a doctor.
